Pop Culture

We basically live and breathe popular culture. Popular culture is a part of every American’s life, like it or not. Pop culture is commercially successful. It will never die just evolve and as it evolves we will only absorb its next stage. First of all, in my circle of friends, we may discuss a new television show. It’s what is new and exciting, there is less of a chance that we are all going to discuss a rerun of an old program. Music also plays a large role in pop culture. We all want to listen what is new, cool, and endorsed by entertainment’s biggest celebrities. This is why some music is entirely successful. Someone else thinks it is cool. This is entirely true for everything now though. Do people not dress themselves differently because a magazine tells them that this is what we should look like. Everyone watches tv. When you turn on the tv, there are a million car commercials with young people and a catchy song that basically says you are not cool unless you buy that little box with a million airbags.
Pop culture defines our generation, our parent’s generation, and every generation that has come or will come. It will affect everyone and everything because it’s human nature to buy into what’s new. Now if you would excuse me I am going to discuss some new movies, buy new cds and clothes, and possibly use some slang. Popular culture is a cult.

hi, i am cristina.
this is a great response! i agree with it as well. pop culture defines our lives. we are who we are b/c of where we live, what the media says is "in", and what kids in school say is "cool". Pop culture does define our generation and every generation. That is why we have the hippies of the 60s and 70s, and the crazy rock-n-roll style of the 80s and the grunge of the 90s and the technologic feels of th new millenium. Pop culture is ecerything and everyone. Awesome!

I totally agree with your statements... especially the comparison of pop culture to a cult, or perhaps even a catalys through which we constant create new cults (though some might take this as an extreme notion, however, by removing the religious connotations this word has come to invoke, we find the definition: a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc, which I find entirely fitting for this discussion). We indeed migrate towards what we find currently "in," creating at all times a new branch of culture based on our ever-changing thoughts pertaining to what is worth soaking up and re-transmitting to others, and our longing to belong to a group with similar ideals. Therefore, I find the view of each individual grouping and following as it's own sect within an overall environment and valid and worth contemplating. These sects even come equipped with bias and predjudice based upon beliefs, as when punks were at odds with hippies during the 70s and early 80s (and currently, as well, though through the social nature of the human, many superficial differences have been over-looked and there are even "cross-breedings" of these particular subcultures). While this is admittedly a strange concept, I feel the truth of this can be ascertained by realizing and recognizing the individuals surrounding us, and pondering the topics of this particular post and the assignment in general. This is at once a saving grace and pleasant dynamic of human existance and culture, and a driving force (which we may hope to stomp out) of segregation.

I like how you refered to pop culture as a cult. I think pop culture is something people crave. Everyone wants the newest and the best and those who can afford it are either envied or hated. Great blog.
